The Holiday Radio Broadcast dates back to 1995.
Following an extended brainstorming session with officials from The Road Home, the question was asked as to how best local radio stations could be of service.
It was decided that during the Holiday Season the organization's funds and ability to service the needs of its clients were stretched to its limits. What they needed was a rush of funds from the public to provide emergency quarters for entire families, warm clothing, food, toys, any and everything that spelled the Holiday Season for anyone.
The need was, of course, to appeal for funds from the public. A concept was conceived, planned, organized then set in to "electronically" pick up whole groups of radio stations....and move them all to the physical site of the shelter....and broadcast live for two mornings before Christmas ....during the busiest time of the year for everyone!
That was the plan then. Now ...the plan is still in place.
Simmons Media Group and Bonneville Media Group, along with volunteers and shelter personnel, man telephones for two days at the shelter, taking pledges of cash and goods. They also receive everything from warm clothing to canned goods curbside at the homeless shelter door in response to radio station morning show DJ's appeals to dedicated listeners arriving directly at the Homeless Shelter with contributions.
This event gets bigger and better every year. Last year's broadcast brought in over $300,000 as well as thousands of in-kind donations such as coats, blankets and gloves. We could not do the holiday broadcast without the support of the community and especially Simmons and Bonneville Media Groups.
