Success Stories

Melanie

When Melanie entered the Shelter she was leaving an abusive relationship. She was dealing with many difficult issues. She filed a restraining order against her ex-boyfriend, sought intensive therapy, and began dealing with issues of abuse, but also the frightening disease of bulimia.

Melanie became involved in counseling and worked extremely hard to make her life better. She conquered the bulimia and took major steps toward becoming self sufficient.

Melanie has taken computer classes and is applying to the Utah College of Massage Therapy. She will go to school for a year where upon graduation she plans to start her own business. She has moved into transitional housing and will soon move into a permanent housing unit.

Melanie is has a strong sense of community. She participated in the Salt Lake Community Shelter's "Helping Hands Helping Hearts" community service projects on a weekly basis, and is planning to continue to do so while living in transitional housing. Melanie is planning to volunteer as much of her time as possible at the shelter, in order to help others move along the same path to self-sufficiency.
