How to Volunteer
We ask all new volunteers and all leaders for volunteer groups to attend our Volunteer Orientation. All regular volunteers are required to pass a background check, complete a volunteer application and sign a confidentiality and boundaries policies agreement. The orientation sessions last about 50 minutes and are followed by a tour of the facility. Please RSVP by contacting Ashley Farmer at 801-328-8756 or via email: afarmer@theroadhome.org. A session will be canceled if no one has registered by 5:00 p.m. the day before.
Volunteer Orientations are held the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the Board Room of the Family Shelter which is located at 210 South Rio Grande (455 West). Parking is available along Rio Grande, 300 South, and along the north end of the Rio Grande Café parking lot.
Volunteer Orientation will not be held on July 3rd due to the holiday.

Literacy Night - Kid's Book Club
The goal of this program is to help children ages 5–11 become interested in reading. Volunteers read a story with the children. Afterward, art and snack activities centered on the theme or characters in the story follow to reinforce the enjoyment of reading. This is a popular program and does fill up. Contact the volunteer coordinator for more information.

Looking for a group activity? Below are some opportunities that are a perfect way for groups to get involved but don’t require an ongoing commitment.
Prepare a Dinner
1. Prepare a meal 2. Bring it to the Shelter 3. Serve it to the residents! Depending on your budget and group size, you can choose to feed the single men, single women, the families or any combination of the three. This is a fun and rewarding project. We ask groups to be limited to 20 individuals.
Donation Drive
There is a continuous need in the shelter for donated items. A Needs List is updated monthly and available here. We also have a list of Service Project Ideas that include putting together swim bags for the children and diaper bags for new mothers.
Kids Activity
The playroom is available on certain Wednesday evenings for group activities with the children. In the past, groups have decorated cookies, brought in craft projects, made presents to give their families during holidays, and much more. You will want to plan for approximately 25 children between ages 2 and 12 years for the activity.
Be Creative
Design your own project. We are very flexible and try to accommodate any ideas.
Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator if you would like more information about these or other opportunities to serve the clients of The Road Home or to register for a volunteer orientation. All volunteers and volunteer group leaders must attend a volunteer orientation. Volunteer Orientations are held the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m.
