Holiday Volunteers

There are a variety of ways to help The Road Home and the people we serve during the holiday season!

We appreciate your passion for volunteering at The Road Home. We do not offer volunteer opportunities on Thanksgiving Day, New Year's Eve, or New Year's Day.

Candy Cane Corner

Each December, The Road Home creates a holiday store for families in our shelter and housing programs, Candy Cane Corner. This store gives parents an empowering opportunity to select gifts for their family. We stock the store with new, unwrapped donations from our community. Volunteers are needed throughout December to help sort donations and wrap gifts. Donations of new clothing, toys and household items are needed from early November though December to stock the store.  This years Candy Cane Corner store location is to be determined.  To view our current needs list please click on the link below.

Holiday Media-Thon

The Road Home's 2016 Holiday Media-a-Thon will be December 21st - 22nd, 2016. Local media stations broadcast live from the shelter and encourage listeners to donate in-kind items or make a financial contribution. The donations collected during this lively event helps us provide shelter and supportive services year round.

You can help by volunteering from December 21st - December 24th, by helping us collect and sort donations that come into The Road Home.  To volunteer during our Holiday Media-Thon at our Downtown Shelter please click here or for our Midvale Center please click here to sign up.

*NOTE:  We ask that volunteers do not park in the Rio Grande Parking lot.  For parking instructions please contact our Volunteer Coordinator at

Large groups welcome.
No age limit for volunteers.

Men's Holiday Gift Bags

Each holiday season we make gift bags to give every man in our shelter programs. This year we will be handing out approximately 600 Holiday bags, but we will take any number and combination of items and/or bags that you can provide.

Each bag includes:

  • Shampoo (please place in a ziplock bag)
  • Shaving gel
  • Razors
  • Toothbrush & toothpaste
  • Chap stick
  • Deodorant
  • Liquid Body Soap (please place in a ziplock bag)
  • Conditioner (please place in a ziplock bag)
  • Gloves - Weatherproof/Gotex are preferred (1 pair)
  • Winter hat (knit, one size fits all)
  • Socks- preferably white tube sock (1 pair)

We ask that the items be put in pillow cases and tied at the top with ribbon or string. Groups can decide on how many bags they can do (5, 25, 50, etc.). We ask that bags be delivered by December 16th. If you are interested, please email Kat Kahn at

Donation Drive

Another great holiday opportunity is to hold a donation drive.  With our increasing numbers we are always in need of donations.  This is an opportunity that can be done with either a small or large group, on any scale.  To find both our Autumn/Winter and Urgent needs list please visit the link below: /give/in-kind-donations/

Gift Cards

Gift cards help make the season bright for families and individuals in our housing programs and at our shelter. Gift cards in $5 increments are needed for: grocery stores, gas stations, clothing stores, and restaurants.

When you come to volunteer at the shelter, we ask that you do not park in the Rio Grande parking lot. The best place to park is at the Gateway Mall's "Summer Parking" garage off of 200 South and walk over. Please enter the first set of double doors on Rio Grande. Thank you!
